Nearly 1.2 million Baby Boomers left the UK workforce during the pandemic, according to a study by retirement technology solutions provider Dunstan Thomas. The research found that 3% of the approximately 13.22 million Baby Boomers aged 58 to 75 were either forced out by earlier than planned retirement or redundancy during the pandemic.
An estimated 384,675 Boomers were pushed out of work during the peak two years of the pandemic from March 2020 to February 2022. However, 6% or 799,753 people aged 58 to 75 years took earlier than planned retirements ‘for another reason’ during the same period.
This latter group contain the much-publicised ‘Great Resignation’ cohort who decided to leave the workforce after re-evaluating their lifestyle during the pandemic.
